IBM Japan to Set Up LGBT-Inclusive ‘Diversity Committee’ - 6 March 2008

IMB Japan has announced that it has launched a Diversity Committee which includes a Sexual Orientation Subcommittee focusing on creating a pleasant work environment for all employees including lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, Fuji Sankei Business i reported on February 13.

IBM Japan has promoted its employment of the disabled and women since 1950s. According to its website, the subsidiary of the US-based IBM Corporation has promoted and appreciated diversity in the company, including recognition and acceptance of cultural differences, and employment of women, disabled and LGBT people with abilities.

The Diversity Committee was established ‘with an expectation that respecting diversity including nationality, sex and sexual orientation will develop a corporate culture of vitality and possibility of self-realization’, the Fuji Sankei Business i reported.

Makoto Otoshi, IBM Japan’s President will chair the Committee. Sexual Orientation Subcommittee will be lead by a 54-year-old senior executive director, Masatsugu Shimono.

IBM in the US provides partner benefits with its employees in same-sex relationships and has an anti-discrimination clause. It’s not rare to see big corporations being LGBT friendly in the EU and North America, but IBM Japan’s new measure is fairly new to Japan. (Editors Tom Paine, Azusa Yamashita)

日本ＩＢＭ　性的少数派にも配慮　多様性尊重で組織

日本ＩＢＭは１２日、社員の多様性の尊重を重視した職場環境の実現を目的に、社内に「ダイバーシティー委員会」を設置したと発表した。国内大手企業では珍しく、「ゲイ、レズビアン、バイセクシュアルなどいった性的マイノリティーの人々も気兼ねなく働ける環境とネットワーク作り」を目指した「セクシャル・オリエンテーション」部門も設置、アジア統括部門のＡＰなどとも連携して開かれた雇用環境を整える。

同委員会は日本ＩＢＭ独自の組織。国籍や性別、同性愛のような性的志向など個人の多様性を尊重することが、自己実現が可能で活力のある企業文化の育成や発展につながるという考えから作られた。背景には、少子高齢化が進展するなか、将来の雇用環境の変化に対応できる社員の意識改革を図りたい考えもある。

大歳卓麻社長は同日の会見で、「いろいろな人が世界中で一緒に働くことで、新たな価値を生み出す効果がある」と述べ、グローバル化をさらに進める上で、多様性の尊重が重要になるとの認識を示した。

委員長は大歳社長が務め、５つの部門を設置。「女性」は鷺谷万里氏、「ワークライフ・バランス」は磯崎覚氏、「障害のある人々」は出澤研太氏、「セクシャル・オリエンテーション（性的志向）」は下野雅承氏、「マルチ・ナショナル（多国籍性）」は坪田國矢氏の各執行役員がリーダーとなり、社員からの意見などを積極的に吸い上げて経営に取り入れていく方針だ。

日本ＩＢＭでは、同委員会に「セクシャル・オリエンテーション」部門を設置したことについて、「国内、国外を問わず、同性愛などの性的マイノリティーの尊重をこれほど積極的に行う企業は少ないのでは」（広報担当者）としている。（フジサンケイ）
